8 benchmarks for physician compensation

MD Ranger released 2017 physician compensation benchmarks based on physician contracts from 325 facilities across the United States.

Here are the key trends from the report:

1. The per diem call coverage rate was up 5 percent last year.

2. Median annual medical directorship payments given jumped 13 percent.

3. Eighty-three percent of MD Ranger hospitals paid for orthopedic call coverage last year.

4. Fifty-two percent of MD Ranger hospitals paid for ophthalmology call coverage.

5. The median medical director pay declined from $82,700 in 2012 to $61,050 this year.

6. The medical specialist median payments declined from $55,000 in 2012 to $54,000 in 2017.

7. Hospital-based agreements including incentive payments grew from 28 percent last year to 39 percent this year.

8. More healthcare organizations are paying physicians for case management and quality initiatives, and the 75th percentile for annual payments grew from $81,290 last year to $104,480 this year.
