5 things to know about the American Academy of Ophthalmology's new president: Dr. Keith Carter

Keith Carter, MD, began his term as the 122nd president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Jan. 1.

Here's what you should know about Dr. Carter:

1. Dr. Carter has 30-plus years experience as a physician educator at Iowa City-based University of Iowa.

2. During his tenure, he is going to focus on enhancing the academy's community and professional impact.

3. Dr. Carter served as an at-large member of the organization's board of trustees from 2007 to 2010. He also served on numerous committees including the ethics committee, committee for the medically underserved-mentor program and the self-assessment committee, among others.

4. Dr. Carter's clinical specialty is in oculoplastic surgery. After earning his medical degree from Lafayette, Ind.-based Purdue University, he completed a residency at Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan and a fellowship at University of Iowa.

5. In addition to his educator duties at the University of Iowa, he also serves as head of the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences.
