5 considerations when taking on a physician leadership role

Cheryl Pegus, MD, director of the general internal medicine division and clinical innovation at New York University Langone Medical Center in New York City, highlights five considerations when taking on a physician leadership role, according to Medscape.

1. Get the necessary additional training and education in areas including predictive modeling, data analytics, reimbursement, clinical trials and regulation.

2. Join local and national organizations comprised of people you will be working with moving forward in your new role.

3. Learn from a mentor who can offer advice as well as constructive criticism.

4. Understand what each team member brings to the table and find out how to best work as a team.

5. Remember that you are a provider first and foremost. Physicians bring an important perspective to leadership and can help organizations successfully transition to value-based care.
