WVU Medicine Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center performed its first bariatric surgery Sept. 22, launching a new weight-loss surgery service for Ohio Valley patients, local NBC and FOX affiliate WTOV 9 reported Sept. 23.
Dr. Mustapha Daouadi performed the first procedure. The hospital runs the bariatric program with regional surgeons Dr. Joseph Colella and Dr. Sean Scanlon. Along with Dr. Daouadi, they will offer patients several surgical options for weight management.
The launch adds a new specialty to the medical center’s surgical services. Patients in the Ohio Valley can now get specialized weight-loss surgery without traveling far from home.
The hospital described the first case as another step in expanding the specialized surgical care available locally. It also tied the launch to WVU Medicine’s commitment to bringing advanced services to the region.
WVU Medicine is the health system of West Virginia University. It is adding specialty services at Weirton Medical Center, a 238-bed hospital, as it builds out care across the Ohio Valley.
