Prior to pH capsule placement, referring physicians completed a questionnaire regarding indications for the test, symptoms, prior testing and medication use. A follow-up survey determined whether respondents believed that results of the wireless pH test provided new information or changed diagnosis or patient management.
Results showed acid reflux was the most common symptom leading to pH capsule placement (62 percent), followed by chest pain (11 percent). Wireless pH capsule results provided new information in 88 percent of patients, changed the diagnosis in 22 percent and altered management in 63 percent.
