Dr. Black founded Black & Wyatt Records with his colleague, Robert Wyatt, MD, a pediatric nephrologist who also practices at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. The record label focuses on producing music from artists involved in Memphis’ burgeoning underground music scene. Dr. Black said he co-founded the label for the love of music, and not for the potential profits involved.
“We have our day jobs. We want to get the music out there,” he told the Flyer.
Dr. Black worked at his hometown’s radio station, WKBL, during his high school years, as well as Memphis State University’s station, WTGR.
“Music has kind of been my hobby all along,” Dr. Black told the Flyer. “Unfortunately, I can’t really play. But I like hearing live music, and I have a good record collection.”
The label’s first album released Oct. 24, and another featuring a Memphis high school garage band from the 1950’s is currently in the works.
