A study published in JAMA Surgery examined the effectiveness of video and audio colonoscopy recordings compared to narrated recording alone, the Oncology Learning Network reports.
Researchers examined 113 cases of patients receiving laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer between Jan. 12, 2016 and Oct. 30, 2017 in the Netherlands. Surgeons were asked to methodically capture steps of the surgery in short video clips.
What they found:
1. A mean of 52.5 percent of 631 steps were captured in the control group by narrative report.
2. The video recording group had 78.5 percent of its steps adequately captured.
3. The narrative report supplemented by video group had 85.1 percent of its steps captured.
Researchers concluded, "Use of [video] in laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery as an adjunct to the NR might be superior in documenting important steps of the operation compared with [dication] alone, adding to the overall availability of necessary intraoperative information and contributing to quality control and objectivity."
