University of Chicago joins Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot Initiative to fight CRC — 5 insights

The University of Chicago Medicine's Center for Asian Health Equity is joining the Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot Initiative to prevent colorectal cancer.

Here's what you should know:

1. The National Cancer Institute has a variety of programs to increase CRC screening rates.

2. The NCI awarded University of Chicago's Karen Kim, MD, and Blase Polite, MD, about $6 million over five years to advance their CRC prevention efforts.

3. Illinois' CRC screening rate is among the lowest in the U.S. One of Illinois' most populated counties, Cook, also has one of the highest CRC mortality rates in the state.

4. The university is hoping to curb those numbers by targeting underserved populations.

5. Dr. Kim said, "We are thrilled to have this opportunity to study the implementation of evidence-based interventions to increase colorectal cancer screening among vulnerable populations."
