Sacramento-based UC Davis Health has opened the region’s first dedicated adult congenital colorectal clinic.
The clinic will care for adult patients with congenital colorectal and pelvic conditions diagnosed in infancy, including anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung disease and cloacal anomalies, according to a May 11 news release. Many patients continue to experience long-term complications such as fecal incontinence, chronic constipation, pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary concerns and sexual and reproductive health challenges, according to a UC Davis Health news release.
Fewer than five adult congenital colorectal programs exist nationwide, making the clinic one of a small number of programs focused on the transition from pediatric to adult care.
The multidisciplinary clinic will bring together pediatric and adult specialists, including Kendall Ouzts, NP, adult colorectal surgeon Sean Flynn, MD, pediatric GI Maheen Hassan, MD and Payam Saadai, MD interim co-chief of the Division of Pediatric General, Thoracic and Fetal Surgery in the UC Davis Department of Surgery and director of the Pediatric Colorectal Center at UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
