UAB Medicine partners with SeamlessMD to guide patients through recovery: 3 insights

University of Alabama at Birmingham Medicine partnered with Toronto, Canada-based patient engagement and care management platform SeamlessMD, the Birmingham Business Journal reports.

Here are three things to know:

1. UAB Medicine aims to boost its telemedicine capabilities with the partnership for its Enhanced Recovery After Surgery program. ERAS was first implemented for colorectal surgeries.

2. ERAS is a patient-centered approach to integrate evidence-based interventions across the entire surgical pathway, with the goal of improved patient satisfaction and health outcomes.

"The ability to give patients the right information at the right time is an exciting next step for UAB's ERAS program, where timely patient education is imperative," said Gregory Kennedy, MD, PhD, professor and director of UAB's division of gastrointestinal surgery. "Patient engagement is critical during the weeks immediately after surgery, when patients are most vulnerable to complications such as infections."

3. With the partnership, UAB now provides a digital application to guide patients from surgery preparation to recovery. Patients can access the application on a mobile phone, computer or tablet and receive reminders to follow their care plan. The application also provides educational resources for patients to learn what to expect from surgery and the recovery process.
