University of California San Diego topped U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 list of the best universities for gastroenterology and hepatology in the U.S.

The ranking was published in June as part of U.S. News’ 2025-2026 “Best Global Universities,” which comprises 23,450 universities in total.

Eligible universities with gastroenterology and hepatology programs of study were ranked based on the following factors: publications, total citations, books, conferences, number of publications that are among the 10% most cited, number of highly cited papers that are among the top 1% most cited in their respective fields, international collaboration, and global and regional research reputation.
