Risk stratification has the potential to dramatically change colorectal cancer screening strategies.
A team of researchers from Luxembourg has found a simple panel of eight genetic biomarkers may be able to identify which patients are at a high risk for developing CRC following a screening colonoscopy, according to a Medscape report.
The researchers presented their data at the 17th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer held July 1 to July 4 in Barcelona, Spain.
The test uses standard blood samples and could be done at any time. The researchers found that a panel with just three of the eight studied biomarkers was almost as accurate. The test could serve as a low-cost option for determining which patients are candidates for repeat colonoscopy, according to the report.
