Study: n-3 PUFAs effectively improve nutritional status, immune function in GI cancer patients — 4 insights

A study published in BMC Cancer examined how Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, n-3 PUFAs, affect nutritional status and immune function in GI cancer patients undergoing surgery.

China-based Beijing Friendship Hospital’s Dr. Jing Yu and colleagues searched several databases to identify how Omega-3 acids compared to isocaloric nutrition. Researchers included nine randomized trials and 623 participants in the study.

Here’s what they found.

1. An omega-3 regime resulted in decreased levels of C-reactive protein, interleukin-6.

2. The regime increased levels of albumin, D3+ T cells, CD4+ T cells and CD4+/CD8+ ratio compared to isocaloric nutrition.

3. There was no difference in tumor necrosis between the two variables.

4. CD8 + T cells decreased with Omega-3 acids compared to isocaloric nutrition.

Researchers concluded, “Our meta-analysis revealed that n-3 PUFAs are effective in improving the nutritional status and immune function of GI cancer patients undergoing surgery as they effectively enhance immunity and attenuate the inflammatory response.”
