The study, titled “Exhaled volatile organic compounds identify patients with colorectal cancer,” was published in the British Journal of Surgery.
The study’s results show colorectal cancer patients have a different volatile organic compound pattern compared with healthy controls, based on analysis of compounds in exhaled breath samples. The probabilistic neural network used in the study was able to identify patients with colorectal cancer with more than 75 percent accuracy.
