Study: Bladder and Ureteral Injury After GI Surgery Increases

Lower urinary tract injury following gastrointestinal surgery has increased, according to a review of data in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database.

According to Renal & Urology News, researchers used CPT codes to query the database for GI surgery and bladder and ureteral injury. Between 2002 and 2008, the rate of ureteral injury rose from 0.17 percent to 0.25 percent, and the rate of bladder injury rose from 0.48 percent to 0.54 percent.

The rate of ureteral injury following laparoscopic GI surgery was 0.16 percent in 2008, the highest cause of ureteral injuries.
