The practice is co-owned by gastroenterologists Bakul Patel, MD, and Suresh Jayatilaka, MD, who originally founded the system’s first location in 2003.
Dr. Patel and Dr. Jayatilaka’s choice to open a second location comes as the nearby Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital has decided to cut back on certain specialities, leaving patients in the region nervous about finding quality care.
“There is uncertainty right now with the hospital in town and the outflow of some doctors leaving,” Dr. Patel told the Gazette. “We decided to invest in the community that’s given us so much and we want to provide good care for our patients. The medical business landscape we’ve come accustomed to over the years is truly changing. We hope this helps to provide cost effective quality care for our patients.”
