Son high on mushrooms in fatal stabbing of gastroenterologist Dr. Andrew Chan — 5 insights

A toxicology report showed Thomas Chan was allegedly high on mushrooms when he fatally stabbed his father Andrew Chan, MD, TheRecord.com reports.

1. Mr. Chan allegedly fatally stabbed Dr. Chan, a gastroenterologist, in December 2015. Mr. Chan also stabbed Lynn Witteveen, who survived.

2. A judge-alone trial began Sept. 10. Mr. Chan is charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.

3. Mr. Chan admitted to using magic mushrooms after a night of drinking. A toxicologist described the effects of magic mushrooms to the court.

4. After Mr. Chan took the mushrooms, he began to mediate. While hallucinating, Mr. Chan believed he was god, but "everyone was against him." That led to the stabbing.

5. Mr. Chan allegedly took responsibility for the attack in a taped interview with the police; however, he entered two not guilty pleas earlier in the hearing.
