In a recent study published in the Annals of Surgery, researchers developed a measurement tool to evaluate the quality and outcomes of colorectal surgery.
The HARM score is based on hospital stay, readmission and mortality rates. The score can be calculated using routine administrative data. The researchers also examined a national inpatient database for all colectomy discharges from 2010 to 2011 to determine the potential value of the tool.
The study concludes that the HARM score is an easy and reliable means of evaluating quality and outcomes of colorectal surgery.
