Randomized trial of FMT for IBD yields mixed results

Fecal microbiota transplantation has shown great promise as a treatment for C. difficile infection, but the same may not hold true for inflammatory bowel disease.

In a recent randomized controlled trial of FMT as an IBD treatment, researchers randomized 26 patients with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis to receive an FMT enema and 27 UC patients to receive a placebo enema, according to a Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News report.

The trial resulted in 15 percent of FMT patients and 8 percent of placebo patients achieving clinical remission. Seven FMT patients and eight placebo patients experienced at least 30 percent improvement.

The authors concluded that the study results did not reflect a statistically significant effect of FMT in UC but posited that the treatment may be more effective if administered over a longer period of time.
