Researchers conducted a population-based study examining 290,592 individuals aged 66 years and older who commenced PPI therapy and an equal number of matched controls.
The study found that the rates of acute kidney injury were 13.49 per 1,000 person-years for the PPI therapy group as compared to 5.46 per 1,000 person-years for the control group. The rates of acute interstitial nephritis were also higher among patients given PPIs.
