Penn State College of Medicine taps Dr. Thomas Ma for chairmanship — 4 key notes

Penn State College of Medicine appointed Thomas Ma, MD, department of medicine chair for both Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. All organizations are based in Hershey, Pa.

Here’s what you should know:

1. Dr. Ma currently serves as the chief of gastroenterology at Albuquerque-based University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. He also serves as the executive director of the university’s Center for Digestive Disorders, Center for Digestive Disease Research and Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

2. Dr. Ma is internationally recognized for his research on defective intestinal barriers.

3. He is the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology’s editor-in-chief.

4. Dr. Ma succeeds Robert Aber, MD, who is stepping down from the position after 13 years. Dr. Aber will remain on the university’s faculty.
