Patient navigation materials increase screening colonoscopy rates, study says

More low-income Latino patients were likely to get a screening colonoscopy when provided patient navigation materials, according to a study published in Cancer and reported on in CancerNetwork.

Researchers analyzed screening rates for 304 Latino patients after 12 months of intervention. Researchers created three intervention groups: 20 percent of patients received only patient navigation; 40 percent received standard CDC and prevention print materials with navigation; and 40 percent received culturally targeted print materials and patient navigation.

Patient navigation increased the colonoscopy rate of Latino patients from 48 percent to 82 percent among naviated patients. However, the culturally targeted materials did not increase screening rates to a greater extent than patient navigation did.

Screening rates in participants making under $10,000 annually increased to 87 percent with patient navigation, while those making more than $10,000 annually had a screening rate of 75 percent.

Researchers said, however, the results may be limited by their geographical region and the patients' insurance status.
