A study conducted in the Netherlands analyzed nearly 1,400 GI cancer patients and found a subgroup of patients who took aspirin post-diagnosis had a higher survival rate than patients who did not, according to a Medscape report.

Ikuo Hirano is a professor of medicine and director of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. He is a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and American Gastroenterological Association.

Lonsurf, a combination of trifluridine and tipiracil in pill form, is designed to treat advanced colorectal cancer patients who have had previous chemotherapy and biologic treatments. The drug has now received FDA approval, according to the American Gastroenterological Association.
