Olympus alerted European hospitals of scope infection risk 2 years ago

Duodenoscopes have made national headlines this year due to a number of “superbug” outbreaks. Olympus warned European hospitals of infection risk linked to these scopes approximately two years ago, but a similar warning was not released in the United States until recently, according to a LA Times report.

Olympus issued the first of two safety alerts on its TJF-Q180V duodenoscope in Europe in January 2013. Another alert was released in August 2014. A similar alert was not released in the United States until the news of the UCLA CRE outbreak made headlines this February.
