According to a United Press International report, Francesco Rubino, MD, said approximately 285 million people worldwide suffer from type 2 diabetes, a number that is expected to double by 2030. According to the analysis presented at the World Congress, bariatric surgery is a cost-effective treatment for the disease, costing between $15,000 and $24,000 in the U.S.

The surgery apparently also generates cost savings and health benefits, saving money in the long run as type 2 diabetes patients require less expensive care following surgery.
