New Jersey Surgeons Perform State's First Robotic-Assisted Bariatric Surgery

Ajay Goyal, MD, and Glenn Forrester, MD, became the first New Jersey surgeons to offer robotic-assisted bariatric surgery, after performing the state's first gastric bypass using the daVinci Surgical System at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, according to a release.

The robotic surgery, performed at Trinitas in July, opens the doors to weight-loss surgery for bariatric patients whose excess weight places limitations on conventional surgical tools, according to the report. Dr. Forrester explained that more obese patients present a challenge to physicians because their body structure limits the use of conventional laparoscopic instruments.

According to the report, the daVinci system extends the reach of surgeons during delicate laparoscopic procedures with robotic "hands" that reproduce the movement of fingers. Surgeons also control a camera that enhances their vision of the surgery.

Trinitas is the first hospital in the state to expand its robotic surgery offerings to include bariatric surgery, according to the report. Dr. Goyal and Dr. Forrester practice at New Jersey Bariatric Center in Union.
