New technology now allows GI physicians to remove patients’ gallstones without open abdominal surgery and a hospital stay, avoiding longer recovery times and higher healthcare costs, according to an Albany Herald news report.

The SpyGlass System by Boston Scientific can be used for patients with gallstones, bile duct stones and pancreatic cancer. The technology consists of a small catheter, which is threaded through an endoscope that enters into the bile ducts via the patient’s mouth and stomach. Once the physician finds the stones through the endoscope, the larger stones are broken down by shock waves sent through the catheter. The stones are then removed with a balloon, according to the report.
