Laparotomy mortality rates outrank other emergency procedures at 23.76%: 7 statistics

Boston-based Brigham & Women's Hospital researcher found laparotompy procedures had the highest mortality rates among other emergency general surgeries, according to Medscape Multispecialty.

Investigators analyzed partial colectomy, small bowel resection, cholecystectomy, operative management of peptic ulcer disease, lysis of peritoneal adhesions, appendectomy and laparotomy in their study.

Here are seven statistics on mortality rates:
•    Laparotomy — 23.76 percent
•    Operative management of peptic ulcer disease — 6.83 percent
•    Small bowel resection — 6.47
•    Partial colectomy — 5.33 percent
•    Lysis of peritoneal adhesions — 1.59 percent
•    Cholecystectomy — 0.22 percent
•    Appendectomy — 0.08 percent
