Kaiser Permanente Researchers Link Long-Term PPI Use to B12 Deficiency

The Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Calif., recently published a study in The Journal of the American Medical Association examining the connection between proton pump inhibitor and histamine 2 receptor antagonist use and malabsorption of vitamin B12.

The researchers found that a two or more years’ supply of PPIs and a two or more years’ supply of H2RAs are associated with an increased risk for B12 deficiency. The researchers concluded that risks and benefits of these medications should be weighed before use.

The study’s authors include Douglas A. Corley, MD, PhD; Wei Zhao, MPH; Jennifer L. Schneider, MPH; and Jameson R. Lam, MPH.
