GIs see highest board certification pass rates of any specialty

About 96% of future gastroenterologists passed their initial board certification exam on the first try in 2023, according to new data from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

That number has remained fairly steady over the last five years, with a 97% pass rate in 2019 and 2020, a 96% pass rate in 2021, and a 95% pass rate in 2022. 

Gastroenterologists had the highest pass rate of any physician specialty in 2023, tied with infectious disease specialists. 

Nephrologists had the lowest pass rate in 2023, with 80% of students passing the board certification exam on their first try.
