GI researcher Dr. Anil Rustgi named director of Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center

New York City-based Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center named Anil Rustgi, MD, director of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, pending trustee approval.

Here's what you should know:

1. Dr. Rustgi is a gastrointestinal tumor researcher. He spent 20 years at Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania, where he co-led the university's tumor biology program.

2. Columbia University's Dean of the Faculties of Health Science and Medicine Lee Goldman, MD, said, "After a national search that yielded a number of outstanding candidates, Dr. Rustgi stood out not only for his contributions as an academic oncologist, but also for his energy and his reputation as a consensus builder who is able to work across disciplines and organizational boundaries."

3. Dr. Rustgi said he looked forward to joining Columbia and continuing the university's patient care and research efforts.

4. Dr. Rustgi earned his medical degree from Durham, N.C.-based Duke University. He completed a residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, both in Boston.
