Can physicians express their thoughts in 140 characters or less? Though Twitter is one of the most popular social media platforms, gastroenterologists may prefer a different medium.

A study led by Shou Jiang Tang, MD, of the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, examined the social media habits of GI physicians across the country, according to a Duluth News Tribune report.

Of the 265 gastroenterologists who responded to the study survey:

•    Half did not participate in any social media platforms
•    49 percent of active social media users were on Facebook
•    18 percent of active social media users were on Twitter

Dr. Tang posited that the short-form style Twitter offers may be less attractive than the more flexible Facebook word count, particularly when it comes to sharing study results, according to the report.
