GI physician leader to know: Dr. William Chey of University of Michigan Health System

William D. Chey, MD, is a professor of internal medicine, director of the GI Physiology Laboratory and co-director of the Michigan Bowel Control Program at University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. He serves as a member of the board of trustees and Practice Parameters Committee of the American College of Gastroenterology. He is also a past chair of the Clinical Practice Section of the American Gastroenterological Association.

Dr. Chey is a member of the board of directors of the Rome Foundation, an independent, nonprofit organization that provides support for activities designed to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders. He has authored more than 200 manuscripts, reviews and book chapters. He is the co-editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Gastroenterology. He also serves on the editorial board of Digestive Health Matters and Gastroenterology & Hepatology.

Dr. Chey's clinical interests include functional bowel and motility disorders including irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, functional heartburn, dysphagia and dyspepsia, as well as H. pylori infection and acid related disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcer disease.

Dr. Chey earned his medical degree at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. He completed his residency at Emory Affiliated Hospitals, and he has completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at University of Michigan Health System.
