GI physician leader to know: Dr. Michael Camilleri of Mayo Medical School

Michael Camilleri, MD, is a professor of medicine at the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn. He previously served as president-elect of the American Gastroenterological Association between 2014 and 2015.

Dr. Camilleri’s clinical interests include gastrointestinal motility and function and appetites.

Dr. Camilleri studies gut-based gastrointestinal diseases and diseases in which conditions such as diabetes mellitus, scleroderma and neurological diseases affect the gastrointestinal tract.

The National Institutes of Health awarded Dr. Camilleri several research grants, including several R01 and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants.

Dr. Camilleri earned his medical degree from the University of Malta Medical School in Guardamangia and completed his residency at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Guardamangia. He underwent an internal medicine and gastroenterology fellowship at Hammersmith Hospital at the University of London.
