GI physician leader to know: Dr. Michael Camilleri of Mayo Clinic

Michael Camilleri, MD, is a professor of medicine at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn., where he also serves as a consultant in gastroenterology, physiology and biophysics. He is president-elect of the American Gastroenterological Association.

Dr. Camilleri focuses on diabetic gastroparesis, obesity, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic constipation and bile acid diarrhea. His research interests include disorders of gastrointestinal motility and function as well as the factors that determine people’s appetites.

 

Dr. Camilleri holds several R01 and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants from the National Institutes of Health. He has won numerous awards over the course of his career, including the Ismar Boas medal from the German Society of Digestive and Metabolic Disease and the Distinguished Mentor Award from AGA. He was the founding editor of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, editor of AGA Perspectives and an associate editor of Gastroenterology.

 

Dr. Camilleri earned his medical degree at the University of Malta Medical School in Guardamangia, Malta. He completed his residency at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Guardamangia as well as clinical and research fellowships at the Mayo Clinic.
