GI physician leader to know: Dr. Helen Shields of Harvard Medical School

Helen M. Shields, MD, is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston and a senior physician in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, also in Boston. She previously provided care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. She is also chairman of the Colorectal Cancer Advisory Committee of Harvard University’s Risk Management Foundation.

Dr. Shields’ research interests include the effects of radiation and chemotherapy for breast cancer, lung cancer and lymphoma on the distal esophagus. Her work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, such as Digestive Diseases and Sciences, Gastroenterology and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She has previously won the Distinguished Educator Award from AGA.

Dr. Shields earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and completed a residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and a fellowship at University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia.
