GI physician leader to know: Dr. David Katzka of Mayo Clinic

David A. Katzka, MD, is head of the esophageal interest group in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic. A consultative esophagologist, he previously provided care at Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine, where he created the multidisciplinary Center for Swallowing Disorders. He is a secretary of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Katzka’s clinical interests include eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal motility disorders, gastroesophageal reflux and unusual esophageal diseases. He has an active interest in research, particularly in the areas of differentiating eosinophilic from gastroesophageal reflux disease, the disease mechanisms that lead to esophageal inflammation in eosinophilic esophagitis and improving methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Katzka has won a number of awards, including the Distinguished Clinician Award from the American Gastroenterological Association; the NIH Clinical Investigator Award; and the Louis Duhring Award for Excellence in Clinical Specialty Medicine, a University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine award. He serves on the editorial board of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology and as a section editor for Gastroenterology.

Dr. Katzka earned his medical degree from Mount Sinai Medical School in New York and completed his residency at Mount Sinai Hospital. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
