GI physician leader to know: Dr. Colleen Schmitt of Galen Medical Group

Colleen M. Schmitt, MD, practices with the Galen Medical Group in Chattanooga, Tenn. She is the past president of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. She assumed the ASGE presidency in May 2014. She previously served as the ASGE chair of the Health and Public Policy Committee and has been chief of the division of gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Chattanooga Unit.

Dr. Schmitt has served as a reviewer for GIE: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, which is ASGE’s journal. He is also a past president of the Tennessee Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and has authored more than 50 scientific papers, books chapters, reviews and editorials.

Dr. Schmitt completed his medical education at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at Duke University in Durham, N.C.
