GI physician leader to know: Dr. Carol Burke of Cleveland Clinic

Carol Burke, MD, provides care in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Cleveland Clinic and also serves as director of its Center for Colon Polyp and Cancer Prevention and co-director of its multidisciplinary Hereditary Cancer Clinic. She is on the board of trustees of the American College of Gastroenterology, and she a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Gastroenterological Association and International Society on Inherited Gastrointestinal Hereditary Tumors.

Dr. Burke focuses on chemoprevention of colorectal neoplasia, colonic neoplasia, colorectal cancer screening strategies, as well as hereditary polyposis and nonpolyposis colorectal cancer and colon cancer prevention. She is an associate editor for the American Journal of Gastroenterology and serves as a reviewer for Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Burke is well-known for her work in the polyposis syndromes and has been awarded research grants from the National Cancer Institute and the American College of Gastroenterology, among other, to study the effects of chemopreventive agents on the prevention of intestinal neoplasia.

Dr. Burke earned her medical degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health in Columbus and she completed her residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital, also in Columbus. She has also completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Cleveland Clinic.
