GI physician leader to know: Dr. Atilla Ertan of UT Health Science Center

Atilla Ertan, MD, is a professor of medicine in the gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition division at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. He is also the medical director of the Digestive Disease Center and Gastroenterology Center of Excellence at Memorial Hermann Hospital, Texas Medical Center. He has previously served as chief of the gastroenterology section at the Methodist Hospital/ Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Ertan has published more than 160 articles in peer-review journals, book chapters and books. He has also received numerous awards and honors, such as the 2003 Distinguished Clinician Award by the American Gastroenterology Association. He has served on a number of committees of professional societies such as the AGA's Education Committee and the American College of Gastroenterology's International Relations Committee.

Dr. Ertan focuses on the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel diseases including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, various microscopic colitides, as well as biliary/pancreatic benign and malignant disorders and Barrett's esophagus with dysplasia.

Dr. Ertan earned his medical degree at University of Ankara School of Medicine in Turkey, where he also completed his residency in internal medicine. He has completed two gastroenterology fellowships, at University of Ankara and at Hospital of University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
