GI physician demand rises for 4th straight year — 4 insights from Merritt Hawkins survey

Merritt Hawkins released results from its 2018 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives, which found demand for gastroenterologists continues to grow.

Merritt Hawkins reviewed 3,045 permanent physician and advanced practitioner search assignments from April 2017 through March 2018.

Here's what the review found:

1. Gastroenterology is the eighth most requested specialty. Family medicine, psychiatry and nurse practitioners are the top requested.

2. Income ranges in gastroenterology are fluctuating. Here are the income ranges for the past three surveys:

2017 to 2018
Low: $355,000
Average: $487,000
High: $725,000

2016 to 2017
Low: $300,000
Average: $492,000
High: $800,000

2105 to 2016
Low: $300,000
Average: $458,000
High: $600,000

3. The Midwest/Great Plains region routinely offers the highest average salaries for the top five more requested specialties. The region offers the highest for family practice, psychiatry, internal medicine and radiology, and the third highest for nurse practitioners.

4. Hospitals continue to make up the majority of all physician search assignment requests. They represented 40 percent of all searches from 2017 to 2018.
