Dr. Gurney began his career after earning his medical degree from Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina. He completed an internship and residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.
After his training, Dr. Gurney served as a gastroenterology consultant to the Attending Physician to the U.S. Congress. He also was a consultant to several members of the Supreme Court and White House Staff.
He was also a consultant to the National Cancer Institute.
The American Board of Internal Medicine certified Dr. Gurney in internal medicine and gastroenterology.
