Gastroenterologists rank No. 4 highest compensating specialty at $408k

Gastroenterologists ranked among the top five highest compensated physician specialists, according to the Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2018.

Gastroenterologists reported an annual salary of $408,000, wedged between cardiologists who make $423,000 on average and radiologists who make $401,000 on average. Plastic surgeons claimed the No. 1 spot as the highest compensating specialty at $501,000, followed by orthopedists at $497,000.

Gastroenterologists reported a 4 percent increase in average annual salary from 2016 to 2017. The average physician specialist salary was $329,000 in 2017, up from $316,000 in the previous year.

Primary care physicians reported annual salary at $223,000. Factors such as geographic location, practice setting and years of experience affect a physician’s overall compensation.
