Gastroenterologist to know: Dr. Jean-Paul Achkar of Cleveland Clinic

Jean-Paul Achkar, MD, is a staff physician in the department of gastroenterology of the Digestive Disease Center at Cleveland Clinic. He previously served as the director of the Cleveland Clinic Gastroenterology Fellowship Program from 2002 to 2007. He has a special interest in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Achkar is a principal or co-investigator in several research trials that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. He contributed several chapters to medical textbooks and received research awards from the National Institutes of Health, Cleveland Clinic, GlaxoSmithKline Institute for Digestive Health and American College of Gastroenterology.

He has received recognition from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and American College of Gastroenterology. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association as well.

Dr. Achkar earned his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland and completed his residency at the University Hospitals of Cleveland in internal medicine. His additional training includes a fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
