Gastroenterology remains a sought after and high earning specialty, according to the Merritt Hawkins 2019 review of physician and advanced practitioner recruiting incentives.

Merritt Hawkins, a national healthcare consulting and recruiting firm, included a sample of 3,131 permanent physician and advanced practitioner search assignments the company conducted for its clients from April of last year to the end of this March in its review.

Three details:

1. Gastroenterologists were within the top 10 most requested specialists, landing in the No. 9 spot at 85 total searches for the 2018/2019 year, down from 102 the previous year.

2. GIs were surpassed by neurologists, hospitalists and radiologists, to name a few. The most in-demand physician specialty were family medicine physicians.

3. GIs earn an average annual salary of $495,000, according to the report, up 1.6 percent from last year when the average annual salary was $487,000.
