The Swedish study included 81 adolescents aged 13-18 who underwent laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery between June 2006 and April 2009. Researchers found patients had an average BMI of 30 two years after the study, down from 45.5 before surgery. However, fasting insulin levels, fasting glucose, lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoprotein B, white blood cell count and blood pressure all decreased.
The results were presented at the International Diabetes Federation World Diabetes Congress in Dubai.
