Dr. Nicholas LaRusso leads Mayo Clinic-IBM collaboration

Mayo Clinic and IBM have begun a collaboration to leverage IBM’s Watson cognitive computer to enroll patients in clinical trials. Mayo clinic gastroenterologist Nicholas LaRusso, MD, is serving as the project’s lead, according to a CIO report.

At any given time, 8,000 clinical trials are in progress at Mayo Clinic. Through the partnership, Watson will use data analytics and language processing to match patients with appropriate clinical trials. Mayo and IBM aim to improve the speed of discovery and offer patients more treatment possibilities, according to the report.

Mayo Clinic plans to use Watson as a patient enrollment tool as early as next year.
