Providence, R.I.-based University Gastroenterology researchers are studying whether GLP-1 medications could help treat gastrointestinal diseases including Crohn’s disease, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and fatty liver disease, according to a May 27 report by NBC affiliate WJAR.
The medications may help reduce inflammation tied to inflammatory bowel diseases, researchers said. University Gastroenterology is conducting three studies funded by Eli Lilly. One study involving patients with inflammatory bowel disease will compare Zepbound with biologic treatments.
Another study is focused on patients with fatty liver disease and advanced liver scarring that has not progressed to cirrhosis. Researchers are evaluating whether GLP-1 medications can help reduce weight, lower liver enzyme levels and potentially reverse liver damage, according to the report.
