Here are five key notes:

1. The grant will fund a CCFA study focusing on the effectiveness of a specific carbohydrate diet and a Mediterranean-style diet to induce remission in patients with Crohn’s disease.

2. The specific carbohydrate diet was selected because of its popularity among patients and the evolving medical literature suggesting potential therapeutic benefit.

3. The Mediterranean-style diet was chosen based on the strong evidence of its role in overall health.

4. Disease activity will also be assessed by the treating physician before the study begins, at six weeks and at 12 weeks.

5. James Lewis, MD, professor of medicine, senior scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and director of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinical Research Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, will serve as the study’s principal investigator.
