Under the Affordable Care Act, CMS will require gastroenterologists to document cecal intubation rate during colonoscopies. A higher than 95 percent cecal intubation rate is the current quality benchmark. Other quality benchmark report requirements are possible.
Gastroenterologists performing endoscopy procedures are currently receiving a 2 percent bonus for documentation and reporting of quality indication. By 2014, gastroenterologists failing to report these indications will be penalized 1.5 percent of reimbursement fees.
